Inspiration

Field service workers (technicians, maintenance crews, and delivery personnel) are constantly on the move with their hands full. Typing or navigating traditional mobile apps to log maintenance updates, check inventory, or update service tickets creates massive friction. We wanted to bridge natural voice interaction directly to backend enterprise systems without clunky manual interfaces.

What it does

FieldAgent is a voice-driven, serverless AI agent designed for field service automation. It allows field workers to speak natural language commands (e.g., "Update ticket #402 to completed and note that the replacement valve was installed"). The system captures the request via an Alexa+ interface, routes it through an AWS Lambda orchestration engine powered by Model Context Protocol (MCP), extracts structured parameters using Amazon Bedrock, and automatically updates the secure Amazon RDS database in real-time.

How we built it

  1. Interface Layer: Simulated natural language voice inputs mimicking the Alexa+ agentic framework.
  2. Compute & Orchestration: Built a Python-based serverless handler on AWS Lambda implementing clean event-driven routing.
  3. Agent & MCP Layer: Utilized the Model Context Protocol (MCP) standard to securely map natural language intents to specific Python functions.
  4. Reasoning & Data Persistence: Leveraged Amazon Bedrock to handle dynamic parameter extraction and connected the output directly to Amazon RDS (PostgreSQL/MySQL) for reliable state management.

Challenges we ran into

  • Designing a stateless AWS Lambda function to seamlessly handle MCP routing without losing request context.
  • Structuring LLM tool-calling schemas via Amazon Bedrock to ensure high-precision data insertion into relational databases without malformed payloads.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Successfully engineered a serverless event-driven architecture that bridges natural human voice commands to secure backend database operations using AWS Lambda and Python.
  • Implemented the Model Context Protocol (MCP) standard to achieve clean, high-precision intent parsing and tool-calling via Amazon Bedrock without relying on heavy boilerplate frameworks.

What we learned

  • Gained deep, hands-on experience with Model Context Protocol (MCP) standards and how agentic workflows bridge unstructured human speech with structured cloud databases.
  • Mastered serverless event-driven architectures using AWS Lambda and Boto3.

What's next for FieldAgent: Voice-Driven AI Automation

  • Integrating real-time audio streaming directly from field devices to reduce latency during offline-to-online sync cycles.
  • Expanding the agent's toolsets to handle predictive maintenance alerts, automated parts ordering, and multi-user team dispatching.
