Inspiration
This year in Floripa, bitcoin++ conference had a hack-on-the-beach theme, the website had messages like hack/relax, we attend to surf classes as satellite event, we got stickers with waves, palmtrees and so on in the swag bag.
Florianopolis is a beautiful island, a great background for a hackathon. Even though coding under an air conditioning is super nice, since the beginning we kinda of tried to look for projects that would also work as an excuse for our team to actually do the work on the beach, seeing and talking with locals and tourists in the actual nice places.
Also, this year we had the amazing opportunity of doing a UX bootcamp event at the same period as the bitcoinplusplus, which means that Designers, UX Writers, Photografers and other artists were here to help us be less nerdy and experience a different vibe.
Our team
2 UX, 1 Business, 1 Coder
What we did
We surveyed random people on the streets at 2 locations on Friday, in order to have the initial data for a website for submitting research data.
How we built it
The actual project is the website, and due to the prototype nature of hackathon projects, the coder in our group accepted that using an AI tool to replace his talents would be the best thing to do in the time-prioritization grand scheme of things. In other words: we have used Bolt.new (amazing tool)
Challenges we ran into
- explaining what a hackathon is to the new people
- coordinating schedules
- overcoming shyness barriers of talking with strangers
- actually deciding the project after a huge brainstorm on a shared excalidraw with other exceptional options to possibly choose
- people staying at different hotels
- big Açaí cups
- low battery versus Uber
- language barriers in a Brazil/Argentina mix of people
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We finished, we are proud of having the cake and eating it too. Beach + fun + building.
New colleagues.
What we learned
Design tools, new words in another language, techniques to approach strangers in their vacation or work times. More about bitcoin wallets, work on hotels, cafes and the actual beach. Patinete elétrico (electrical scooter) on the streets with cars, very dangerous. Surf, ukulele, etc.
What's next for Field Trip (placeholder name)
- polish the submission functionality that is a little broken
- rewrite everything from scratch (in Rust?), if the idea is validated
- reward interviewers with sats somehow
