Inspiration
The idea for Fiction Fusion came from the excitement of imagining conversations with my favorite characters across different stories, shows, and universes. Growing up with cartoons, anime, books, and games, I always wished to step into those worlds—not just to watch, but to talk, play, and create new adventures with the characters I love. I wanted to build something that makes this dream possible for everyone, combining the magic of fiction with the power of AI and role-playing.
What it does
Fiction Fusion is a web-based role-playing game where users can:
- Chat with their favorite characters from any story universe.
- Play as their favorite characters in chosen scenes, timelines, and even cross-dimensional settings.
- Create entirely new adventures and scripts combining characters from different worlds. It also features Easter Eggs and random character mashups for surprise, fun, and replayability.
How we built it
We used React for the frontend to build a smooth, interactive UI with playful animations and modern gradients. The AI backend is powered by Supabase Edge Functions, which handle all character-based responses using Gemini. The platform supports guest and user login, has a fully responsive design, and includes fun mini-games hidden as Easter Eggs. All chat modes connect to the Supabase function via POST requests and display the conversations in a familiar chat layout.
Challenges we ran into
- Designing a flexible system that could handle characters from different timelines, worlds, and moods while keeping the AI response in-character was tricky.
- Creating dynamic chat roles where users can also role-play as characters was a complex interaction to map out.
- Making the UI playful, smooth, and responsive across all devices while keeping performance fast was a technical balancing act.
- Building random character generators that still made sense and offered fun combinations.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Successfully developed a multi-mode chat and role-play system where users can build their own cross-universe stories.
- Integrated a random mashup feature for instant fun and surprise.
- Embedded Easter Eggs and mini-games to keep users engaged and curious.
- Delivered a polished, game-like UI with modern animations, floating backgrounds, and vibrant themes that feel fun to both play and watch.
What we learned
- How to design scalable UI for chat-based games.
- How to structure API requests for complex, user-defined scenarios.
- How to balance creativity, technical feasibility, and user experience.
- The importance of keeping interactive storytelling simple yet powerful for users.
What's next for Fiction Fusion
- Adding *user profiles with story save options and chat history. *
- Implementing *leaderboards for mini-game Easter Eggs. *
- Expanding the randomizer to include more niche characters.
- Building an in-game character card library for quick selection.
- Possibly adding multiplayer support where users can chat with characters together.
