Inspiration
Healthcare data interoperability remains a significant challenge, particularly because doctors prefer writing free-text notes rather than filling out structured forms. We saw an opportunity to bridge this gap by creating a tool that respects doctors' preferred workflow while ensuring data standardization through FHIR.
What it does
FHIR-Fly automatically converts unstructured medical text into standardized FHIR resources. It processes clinical notes, identifies key medical entities, relationships, and concepts, and transforms them into structured FHIR data that can be easily integrated with modern healthcare systems.
How we built it
Developed a robust NLP pipeline using Python and specialized medical NLP libraries Created FHIR resource mappings using fhir.resources
Challenges we ran into
Complex medical terminology and abbreviations Handling ambiguous medical contexts Ensuring accuracy in medical entity recognition Managing different writing styles and formats Maintaining FHIR compliance across various resource types Dealing with edge cases in clinical documentation
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Successfully converting free text to FHIR resources Creating a solution that doesn't disrupt existing clinical workflows Building a scalable architecture for healthcare data transformation Maintaining HIPAA compliance throughout the process
What we learned
Deep understanding of FHIR standards and healthcare interoperability Advanced NLP techniques for medical text processing Importance of context in medical documentation Complexities of healthcare data standardization Balancing user experience with technical requirements
What's next for FHIR-Fly
Expand support for more FHIR resource types Implement machine learning to improve accuracy Add support for multiple languages Develop real-time processing capabilities Create integrations with major EHR systems Build a user-friendly interface for configuration Enhance privacy and security features Add support for more specialized medical domains
