What inspired us:

Expecting mothers often lack a way to continuously monitor their baby’s health and obtain certain important statuses, relying on periodic tests that are limited and reactive. We wanted to create a solution that empowers mothers with real-time insights to keep both themselves and their babies safe.

How it works:

Fetal Sense translates internal signals from both mother and fetus into clear, real-time health metrics. It provides continuous monitoring, detects potential complications early, and offers general guidance to encourage timely consultation with healthcare professionals.

How we built it:

We combined principles of interoception with speculative wearable sensors and advanced data interpretation. The system automatically detects physiological signals from mother and fetus, translates them into actionable insights, and presents them in an easy-to-understand interface. We used AI to help us understand code to translate into our design and used Figma Make to increase cohesiveness.

Challenges we ran into:

  • Translating subtle physiological signals into meaningful metrics without causing false alarms.
  • Balancing the amount of information shared with users to avoid unnecessary anxiety.
  • Ensuring privacy and ethical handling of sensitive health data, including genetic information.

Accomplishments that we're proud of:

  • Developed a working prototype that captures and interprets maternal and fetal signals.
  • Created a user-focused interface that emphasizes clarity, reassurance, and actionable insights.

What we learned:

  • Interoceptive signals can provide early, valuable indicators of maternal and fetal health.
  • Presenting health data responsibly is just as important as accurate measurement.
  • Collaboration with medical professionals is essential for ethical and effective health monitoring.

What's next for Fetal Sense:

  • Conduct research to validate effectiveness and safety.
  • Expand features to include personalized guidance and integration with healthcare providers for a more connected pregnancy experience.
