Inspiration

In Spain, statistics show that less than 25% of women are working in tech. Statistics also show that women have less presence than men in the information and communication technologies (ICT) sector. This imbalance is accentuated in positions of responsibility, where the proportion of women is lower.

There is a growing need for technology professionals, but it’s difficult to satisfy that need with the talent available in the market. The graduates from universities are paying more attention to the "digital skills gap" and the "gender gap in ICT".

However, several subsidiaries of global tech companies are managed by female leaders. Six tech companies are managed by a woman in Spain: Microsoft, Google, IBM, HP, Facebook, and Twitter.

Like in any other country, "women in Spain represent a great potential of talents for companies that should not be wasted, if not for social justice, for business competitiveness". In the case of technology areas, another issue is the lack of vocations for STEM and bias based on gender.

A prompt given by FIB-UPC inspired me to work on this solution which aims to reverse the gender gap in technology. UPC has great diversity and their students can help in closing the gender gap by providing mentorship to young women like high school, middle school girls

You can be what you can see. STEM is inclusive and doors need to be opened to a career in STEM for everyone.

What it does

The app "FemStem" helps young women in Spain to get mentorship from UPC and other university students especially women pursuing a degree in STEM-related fields. This way they can clear a lot of their doubts like which course will suit them, or what University will provide them a holistic environment to learn and grow. There are other features like "Ada Academy" where girls can learn fundamentals of computer science and other stem subjects. They can also make friends and share their learnings in the "Community" section.

How we built it

I built it using Flutter, a cross-platform development framework that allows us to use the same codebase for multiple platforms like iOS, Android, web, etc. I used graphics, illustrations from dribble, flaticon etc.

Challenges we ran into

The ideation process took a lot of time and I started working on my project pretty late but I tried implementing important features that I had planned.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Happy that I was able to work on FemSTEM and make a submission.

What's next for FemSTEM

Improved UI, more features, solid-backend to support communication and provide a platform for young women across the world
