Inspiration

We were inspired by the need for a stronger support network for women in STEM. Recognizing the challenges women often face in male-dominated fields, we wanted to create a mobile platform for the organization that already exists to foster mentorship, networking, and community. Fems in STEM's mission is to create a space where women in STEM can thrive, share their stories, and gain the resources they need to excel.

What it does

Fems in STEM is an app that connects women in STEM with mentors, industry professionals, and peers. It allows users to create personalized profiles, find mentors or mentees based on their field of interest, and explore opportunities for growth and networking. The platform also provides a space for users to engage in community discussions, attend events, and participate in mentorship programs.

How we built it

We designed the wireframe prototype on Figma, prioritizing user experience and a clean, intuitive interface. On the technical side, we built the app using React Native, Expo and integrated Google authentication using Firebase. We developed a functional profile page where users can edit their details and navigate through different sections of the app, and a login and sign up page, laying the groundwork for future features.

Challenges we ran into

One major challenge was integrating Google OAuth with React Native and Expo, as the mobile app initially faced compatibility issues with the sign-on feature. Another challenge was designing the homepage and bottom tab navigation to be user-friendly and visually appealing.

Accomplishments that we’re proud of

We are proud of successfully implementing Google authentication and Firebase integration, creating a functional profile page, and designing a cohesive and user-centric wireframe prototype in Figma. We also attended almost all the workshops, gaining insights into new technologies and connecting with other hackers.

What we learned

We learned how to integrate Google OAuth with React Native and Firebase, navigate Expo compatibility issues, and design user-focused wireframes and prototypes on Sketchbook and Figma. We also gained valuable knowledge from workshops on XR, product management, and web scraping, broadening our technical skills and perspectives.

What’s next for Fems in STEM

We are excited to continue developing Fems in STEM by implementing new features, including mentorship matching, event registration, and community forums. We also plan to enhance the user interface and add more functionalities to support the growing community of women in STEM. Our vision is to make Fems in STEM the go-to platform for women seeking mentorship, networking, and career opportunities in STEM fields.
