Inspiration
The inspiration for this project is to increase visibility and participation among women in computer science. Additionally, networking and international groups of noted female experts in various technological branches opens the door to solving ethical issues in the computer science world.
What it does
The Fempire is an international community of women taking action, solving problems, and advancing technology. By connecting to collaborate and inspire creativity in the computer science field the Fempire promotes diversity of opinion and drives innovation. Get connected with organizers, mentors, and speakers in your area.
How we built it
We collected data from women who wanted to be included in this project, put all of this information in a JSON object and uploaded to Firebase. We then created hooks and triggers so when new people apply to join, we can approve or deny them to include them as mentors, organizers and speakers. Additionally, we included a hook to geohash their location in order to search for people in a specific region. We then built a webview, which connected to the firebase database to display information in real time while also allowing individuals to create profiles to submit. We also set up an actions-on-google application so that users can get data from our database just by talking to a Google Home device, smartphone, or smartwatch.
Challenges we ran into
We had a couple issues integrating with Firebase and triggering dynamic data from the voice function.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We have just connected an international database of prominent female tech leaders committed to inspiring the next generation of computer scientists.
What we learned
We collectively learned a lot about dynamic web programming and application development.
What's next for Fempire
The next step is a full-featured mobile application, as well as an improved interface and an ever-expanding database of professionals.
