Problem Statement
Inspiration
The inspiration for FemmeForward came from a deeply personal experience. As a young woman, along with my partner and our shared connections—friends and family—navigating the healthcare system, we were both struck by the lack of accessible, reliable information available on critical health topics like reproductive health, mental wellness, and preventive care. We witnessed firsthand how this knowledge gap disproportionately impacted women, leading to poorer health outcomes, financial burdens, and perpetuating gender disparities. Together, we knew there had to be a better way. With my background in AI and our mutual commitment to using technology for social good, we set out to create a solution that could truly empower women with the healthcare knowledge they need to take control of their well-being.
What it does
FemmeForward is a web application designed to provide women with accurate, accessible healthcare information and resources tailored to their unique needs. The platform focuses on key areas such as reproductive health, mental wellness, and preventive care. Through personalized learning paths, interactive quizzes, and AI-generated insights, FemmeForward empowers users to make informed healthcare decisions. Additionally, it includes a community space where women can share experiences and support each other, creating a safe and inclusive environment for learning and growth.
How we built it
The technical foundation of FemmeForward relies on a robust integration of Google Cloud services. We used Google Gemini for AI-powered content generation, Firebase for real-time data synchronization and user authentication, and Firestore for secure database management. This allowed us to build a scalable, reliable platform with global reach for women everywhere. Designing the user experience was also critical. As experienced developers, we collaborated to create an intuitive, visually engaging app that would encourage long-term engagement. Features like adaptive learning paths and interactive quizzes were carefully crafted to empower users in their healthcare journeys.
Challenges we ran into
One of the biggest challenges we faced was ensuring content relevance and sensitivity across age groups. Crafting precise prompts to generate accurate healthcare content while balancing technical accuracy with user-friendly language was a major aspect of our prompt engineering challenges.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We’re incredibly proud of the personalized content generated by Google Gemini. Successfully integrating AI-driven content with real-time data access was a technical achievement, but the real reward has been seeing how the platform can genuinely support women in their healthcare journeys. From refining our adaptive learning paths to addressing content sensitivity, we believe we've created something impactful.
What we learned
Building FemmeForward was a journey of continuous learning, from understanding the healthcare knowledge gap that women face to developing solutions that are both powerful and user-friendly. We learned the importance of incorporating diverse perspectives into our design and content to ensure inclusivity. Additionally, we honed our skills in using Google Cloud services for app development and gained experience in developing an AI-powered platform.
What's next for FemmeForward
Looking ahead, we aim to expand FemmeForward by adding multilingual support to make the platform accessible to more women worldwide. We also plan to explore transitioning from Gemini to Google Edge for faster, deployable AI services. Finally, we envision porting the web application into a mobile version for enhanced accessibility.
