Inspiration

Wordle is a popular word game in which users try to guess the five-letter word of the day in under six tries. When the player finishes the Wordle for the day, there are times when the word is unfamiliar to them; so, this leads them to search up the word's definition on Google. According to the New York Times, over 300,000 people play the game daily, so this searching process could lead to a significant increase in the word's "use over time" graph, visually reflecting how people are learning a new word in real-time.

Women (especially women of color) are underrepresented in STEM. Research has indicated that the presence of female role models increases the positive expectations of success in STEM by young girls! A study conducted by Universidad CEU San Pablo, Madrid, Spain concluded that role-model intervention improves girls' beliefs that they can be successful in STEM fields and increases their likelihood of choosing a STEM major. We thought it would be very important to expose girls to female STEM role models to promote girls in STEM.

Combining the two necessities, we came up with Femdle. Through Femdle, we hope to highlight women in STEM. As players play the game, they will be able to be exposed to female role models.

What it does

Similar to Wordle, Femdle randomly chooses a random First name from our database of women in STEM. After the user finishes the game, a box will pop up that provides a short biography for women with that name.

How we built it

We built Femdle by using our past knowledge of programming and learning as we go.

Challenges we ran into

We had to overcome the challenge of figuring out what frameworks are and how they work in order to connect our frontend and backend together.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We were able to figure out how to use Flask. The appearance of our website looks simple and clean.

What we learned

We learned how to use Flask and how the overall full-stack development works. We learned new programming languages, including HTML, JavaScript, and CSS.

What's next for Femdle

  1. Update color tiles using the color arrays returned
  2. Make it return proper color arrays
  3. Responsive webpage to be used on phones
  4. Styling
  5. Statistics feature
  6. Share score feature
  7. Virtual keyboard
