Inspiration

Since Debby and I are participating in our first ever hackathon, we wanted to make an artifact indicative of this first experience, and that would have a positive impact on us and the people in our lives.

What it does

Upon navigating to the website, the user encounters two buttons that can be clicked, one for femme/female identifying individuals to click, and another for those who do not identify as femme/female, i.e., men. Upon clicking the womxn button, the user is taken to a page with a bunch of encouraging notes, and some fun vibes for a happiness boost and some empowerment. The other button takes the user to a website that is effectively blank, given that this website is, and was designed for the empowerment of womxn, not those engaging and complicit in patriarchal and misogynistic societal structures.

How we built it

We built this website from scratch using VSCode, and first created the structure in html, and used css to make things look a bit nicer (primarily on the female empowerment page). A VSCode extension allowed us to host our website and view changes in real time while we edited it (and saved the corresponding edits), and was very helpful in making sure our formatting and designs looked good.

Challenges we ran into

The biggest and most prominent challenge was the fact that neither of us knew html or css prior to this hackathon, and the fact that we decided to do everything from scratch (from the creation of our files, to linking our css files to our html files, being able to host/access the website, etc.); however, these challenges were welcomed, and our eventual ability to create a functional webpage that linked to two other pages designed by us as well was extremely gratifying.

What we learned

We learned so much over the course of this project, from the basics of html and css, to color theory and design, to what a hackathon even is; even more importantly, we learned how much work goes into web development and the myriad of elements and pieces of knowledge necessary for being able to implement various pieces and elements in a given site.

What's next for Female Empowerment Website Fun

Although we made this project primarily for the purpose of the Superposition V Hackathon, Debby and I may continue working on this webpage after the end of the hackathon, and possibly add more features, spruce up the design, or other cool things.
