Inspiration

We really wanted to find a way to inform kids about the current issues going on around us. Sometimes these topics are seen as sensitive topics, so parents have a hard time teaching their kids about this. We hope that this can bridge that gap and encourage more kids to read!

What it does

We have split the website into different sections regarding the topic the stories are about. The main character is Felix Fox, who goes through many scenarios with hidden lessons. At the end of each story, kids can open up the lesson button, and see how the events in the story relate to the real world. We have included lessons about environmental issues, racial issues, health issues, acceptance of everyone in society, and some general ethics. We also have a page with links to sites for more information and sites to donate to certain causes!

How we built it

We used GitHub to build our website and we mainly used HTML and CSS with a little bit of JavaScript. Our ReadMe code was the main page of our website, and from that file, we linked it to multiple other HTML files (also in the repository) in order to create different pages on our website.

Challenges we ran into

This was all of our first time making a website! It was definitely a struggle in the beginning because one of the main components we wanted was tabs. It probably took us the most time to learn how to create all of the pages.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

It was definitely a huge learning experience, and we are very proud to have a diverse list of characters! We wanted to be as inclusive as possible. We also learned how to make a website public which wasn't super easy at the beginning!

What we learned

We learned (from a mentor and our own searches) how to use Bootstrap, how to create our own website, and how to combine HTML, CSS, and JS to be successful.

What's next for Felix's Fables!

We hope to create more stories, and gear it towards current events, so it never really stops! It can be a good way to get kids involved in politics, community engagement, and it can help them grow up to be better people!
