This is my Capstone project for the Integrated Product Design program. My team agreed that for our final thesis, we wanted to work on something in healthcare. As we explored the space, we noticed that while human healthcare is well-researched, pet healthcare remains largely underserved. This was a direction we were personally motivated to pursue, as three of us are pet parents. Through conversations with pet owners, we identified recurring health concerns and discovered that cat health in particular is understudied. One striking finding: 90% of cats over the age of 12 develop Osteoarthritis (OA), and there is currently no curative treatment for it. What made this more urgent was feedback from both vets and cat owners. Most are unable to recognize the early signs of OA, which leads to a reduced quality of life for cats, costly long-term reliance on pain medications like Solensia, and in some cases, early euthanasia. To address this, we are developing a Smart Cat Tree that passively monitors a cat's daily activity and alerts owners to behavioral changes, enabling earlier intervention and timely treatment. We plan to finalize the design in May, with a product launch targeted for October 2026.
