Inspiration
This project resonates with our team as we are a team of international students. When we first came to Singapore, a foreign land, to pursue our studies, we were not familiar with Singapore culture. At times, we missed home and felt homesick. During that time, it was difficult for us to find fellow Indonesian students in Singapore. We tried applications such as Facebook and Reddit to find an Indonesian community, but it was to no avail. We were fortunate that we were able to find a community by chance and from word of mouth. However, this issue still persists to this day for people who are facing similar problems overseas. Thus, we decided to develop this prototype, hoping to increase the Quality of Life of Singaporeans overseas, especially in the aspect of social interactions.
What it does
SGJio is a mobile application which serves as a platform for overseas Singaporeans to organise meet-ups with one another. The application aims to improve Singaporeans’ quality of life by instilling a strong sense of national identity and providing a support system for them. This application goes beyond casual texting, which is more effective in forming meaningful relationships.
How we built it
We used Figma to build our prototype from scratch.
Challenges we ran into
There were not any major challenges that we ran into. Perhaps, due to the limitation of time, we were not able to develop the actual software. Hence, we decided to create a high-resolution, fully working prototype to get our idea across instead. Essentially, we feel that the concept of our prototype is what matters the most.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud that our application is the first to introduce the idea of making friends by meeting up instead of the typical ones where one makes friends digitally without actually meeting them. We are also proud of being able to incorporate Singlish lingo into the application, which makes our application more tailored to Singaporeans and makes them feel more at home when they are using our application.
What we learned
We learnt how to implement design thinking in the formulation of our application. We now have a greater appreciation for the importance of listening to the needs and opinions of our target users in the ideation as well as continuous improvement of our application, to ensure that it is actually desirable and usable by our target users (in this case overseas Singaporeans). We also learnt new technologies such as Figma for the creation of our prototype.
What's next for SGJio
We are looking to implement additional features in the near future should our application be developed. This may include technical or security features, such as the use of SingPass for an extra layer of user verification. We are also hoping to partner with LifeSG, a platform which provides government services to Singaporeans, to promote our app for the betterment of society.
