Inspiration
Some of our team members have executive function disorder, others have joint issues which require stretching throughout the day to maintain mobility, and others get distracted very easily. We decided to create an application which can help with all these things by providing customizable reminders to users throughout the day with a friendly Froggie face!
What it does
Feel-Good Froggie allows users to select which types of reminders they would like to receive throughout the day, either motivational, food/water related, movement, calming, or mindful. Froggie will pop up on a user's screen with a reminder every half hour with a positive message and a hoppy smile!
How we built it
The back end is built with python, and the GUI was developed with the tkinter python library. The pixel art was created using the pixilart website.
Challenges we ran into
- Firstly, we struggled to come up with an idea that was executable in the short 24-hour coding period. We eventually landed on this idea, which involves elements that we knew would challenge all of us, but were still doable in the allotted time.
- Teagan's hard drive gave up about two hours into the hackathon, so we were down a teammate almost right off the bat.
- We are all backend computer scientists who are more into algorithms than UI, and the main part of this project was creating a cute, fun GUI. This proved to be a challenge, but we have learned a lot along the way.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Ainsley is very proud of learning how to use UI elements in the tkinter python library. Again, we are all backend people, so learning how to create GUIs is something Ainsley is very proud of!
- Caitlyn is proud of the pixel art featured in this application. She has never done pixel art before, but the art ended up looking a lot like our inspo, and we are happy with how it turned out!
- Teagan is proud that she didn't go crazy, because she loves coding, and watching other people code without her was hard. Despite being tense, she provided excellent moral support and expertise to the team.
What we learned
- We learned to use tkinter python library, and we have had a lot of fun exploring the tools available. We also learned how to debug GUIs, which was difficult at first and led to us spending a lot of time debugging, but we are proud of the outcome!
What's next for Feel-Good Froggie
- Expanded categories: We would like to offer a greater variety of reminders for users to choose from.
- User input: We would like to add functionality to take user input so that they can add customized reminders.
- Frequency settings: We would like users to be able to specify how frequently they would like to receive reminders.
