This is our weekly team meeting.
Our current Project Leader is doing manual food recovery!
This was the time a few of our members sat down and drew the wireframe of the app.
This was the demo day, when we officially introduced the web app to other members in our organization!
Despite the stay-at-home order, our team met online to continue our mission!
We are a group of students at University of Missouri - Kansas City, participating in an organization called Enactus. Enactus is a community of student, academic and business leaders committed to using the power of entrepreneurial action to transform lives, and shape a better, more sustainable world. FeedKC is one of the projects under UMKC Enactus.
35 million tons of food is wasted per year, and at the same time 1 in 6 people in the US goes hungry every night, and yet there is no platform to connect those with surplus food and those who are food insecure. FeedKC is intent on eliminating food waste and hunger by redistributing perfectly edible food that would have otherwise been thrown away to those who need it most! So far, we have been manually transporting food from local businesses and cafeterias to food banks and shelters. Realizing this is not a sustainable solution, plus the COVID-19 situation, we decided to build this app!
What It Does
This web application connects businesses and food banks directly, allowing the food recovery process to be efficient and streamlined. How? The businesses will log into the app and create a post for available food to donate. A notification will be delivered to food banks who are registered with the app. Then, the food banks will log into the app and claim the food items.
How We Built It
We used Wordpress to build our web application. However, it's not that easy. Although there are plugins available, we added our own codes to better suit our vision for the app.
Challenges We Ran Into
The Wordpress framework is a bit confusing and not intuitive enough for our purpose. We had to set up a local dev environment to test the features and new items.
Accomplishments That We're Proud Of
The web application is live! After hours of happiness and tear, we finally see our product live. We are excited to see how this app can divert excess food from restaurants while providing freshly prepared meals to underserved populations or individuals in need.
What We Learned
Teamwork makes dream work. It would not be possible if our team did not show dedication and great vision for the future.
What's Next For FeedKC
Now that we have a live app, we have been reaching out to businesses in our city - Kansas City, MO - to partner with them. Despite the COVID-19 situation, we believe that this app will change the lives of hundreds of people and also prevent excess food from ending up in the landfill! After we prove the concept in Kansas City, we will scale this app to other cities around the US, bringing our impacts even bigger!
