Problem Statement: Strangers in public spaces rarely communicate. This can (and seems to often do) cause physical harm (collision, injury) or add to mental harm (stress, anxiety, public phobia). But things don't have to do this way. We can improve our culture of interacting in public by changing our habits and mindset.
Team Introduction: Gwen Leigh
Project Beneficiaries:
People interested in improving public safety in public spaces
General public using public spaces
Identify who will benefit most from your project.
- If giving space for thoughts on public safety can improve our culture, people in public spaces can benefit from increased safety.
- Solution Overview:
- My project is a visual prototype of what this idea can be
- My project is a proto community forum where people can voice thought opinion and share experiences, productively complain about how things can be better
- Online community forums that give shape to thoughts > Reddit > https://grieflifeline.org/ > These forums give space to people so that they can voice or visualise their ideas. Communicating and sharing ideas is the key step that potentially leads to actions and improvements.
- At least I achieved my personal goal of "visualising the idea" of hoping to make the world a safer place.
I applied for Seoul Impact 2023 and I was there, but I withdrew cause I thought I wasn't good enough to create and build anything. This year in 2024, at least I built a skeleton and people can "see" my cause. I'm very proud of my personal progress.
Technical Details: General
ChatGPT was my faithful guide who helped me implement my ideas into code. Frontend
The website was created using React Backend
is integrated to an RDS postgres instance running on AWS (but haven't implemented any functions yet).

Inspiration
As a native South Korean with the multicultural knowledge outside Korea, I find it quite depressing that Korean culture actively avoids communicating in public spaces. For example, a lot of people don't excuse themselves when they step on other people's toe in crowded public transportation, or thank properly when someone holds the door for you.
While traveling abroad and being exposed to a lot of cultures, I learnt that things don't have to be this way. In many cultures, strangers clearly and actively communicate their intentions in public places which makes the space safer and friendlier. I wanted to give this idea a shape to voice this thought.
What it does
My project is a simple prototype of this concept. Ideally, it should work as a community forum where people can discuss subjects and topics focused on active communication in public spaces to prevent physical or mental harm.
Challenges we ran into
- Setting up Postgres and integrating it with the application.
- Understaffing (it's a one-man show for me) and time constraint, gaps in my technical knowledge and skills
What we learned
I don't have to be perfect or be an expert in app development. There are so many tools and resources out there so I just have to have a great idea and the enthusiasm to pull and put those together.
What's next for Feedback Society
- Implement user login and database.
- Build the backend, integrate the backend with frontend so users can actually interact with the website and post things.
