💡 Inspiration
In our community, more than 3,000 children do not have access to the nutritional food and resources that they need to live healthy lives. These young lives, the future of our society, deserve to have the nourishment they need to thrive mentally, physically, and socially.
FeedForward is about providing Food4Kids Waterloo Region (F4KWR) with a platform to streamline their internal applications. By doing so, we hope that F4KWR is able to reach more children in need and have the resources required to support them.
🥕 What it does
FeedForward provides a cohesive platform that simplifies data management, accelerates aiding, and ensures efficient food distribution for F4KWR's mission to combat childhood hunger.
- Self-Reporting Nutritional Needs: Parents can fill out the application form without needing a referral from the school.
- Automated Eligibility Screening: Streamlines applications with automated criteria to filter out qualified applicants.
- Centralized Data Platform: Collects and displays data for trend analysis.
- Efficient Routing: Optimizes food package delivery using location distance algorithms.
⛏️ How we built it
- Uizard: Used to create the mock-up & demo
- Python (Folium, Pandas, Geopy Library): Created a map with the locations of children in need
- Power BI: Created a dashboard for data-driven analysis
- Angular: Filtering application data and creating subsequent tabs with verified candidates
- Routific & Google Maps API: Food Distribution Optimization
🧠 Challenges we ran into
Developing FeedForward presented challenges, including a learning curve involving geocoding locations to be used in map integration in Python. Connecting different components together to share the same data in Angular also presented issues to the team.
However, overcoming these challenges strengthened our commitment to our mission of finding ways to reach children experiencing chronic hunger.
💭 What's next for FeedForward
We aim to integrate our platform with a centralized database to efficiently manage all incoming applications. This will enable us to categorize applicants based on their eligibility criteria. Additionally, we plan to implement a waitlist feature for individuals whom we may not currently have the resources to support but intend to reach out to in the future. To further enhance user experience, we will automate an email service that will periodically contact our users to ensure their ongoing need for our services. We also want to develop separate algorithms for routing between schools and home locations, which would be an important next step for FeedForward.
All of these approaches will streamline our operations and ensure that we can provide timely and relevant support to all children and families who rely on our platform and F4KWR.
