Inspiration
The idea for CancerCnect was inspired by my (yashika jain) grandmother who was diagnosed with breast cancer 2 years ago. She has recovered and is doing really well now but throughout her journey, she was looking for support from people who are going through the same things as her. She found a Whatsapp group chat where she was able to talk to doctors and other patients from the hospital for advice and tips for physical and mental health. However, not every cancer patient around the world has access to that kind of networking. So, for the theme of #buildingbridges, we knew it would be the perfect idea to create a place or community for all cancer patients to feel involved in a community with lots of support.
What it does
Our website and app allows cancer patients to communicate with health professionals and get support from other people going through the same issues. They can also access motivational content, workouts and diet plans as guidance.
How we built it
We first pitched our ideas with each other. Swetha had a fitness app idea for people to stay fit through the pandemic while Yashika had the idea of connecting cancer patients around the world to motivate each other. We decide to combine both the ideas and Giselle explained the layout of the website design and Swetha and her worked on developing it. Yashika and Swetha worked on the app layout.
Challenges we ran into
One major challenge that we ran into was the lack of team members. We started off as a four-member team, but one member left at the start as they couldn't commit to the project, so we were left with a lot of work on our hands. However, we managed to plan things out efficiently and we were able to finish our project!
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're proud that our code has resulted in a beautiful website that can hopefully connect patients worldwide. We're also proud that we were able to create a responsive and easy to follow app prototype with a lot of accessibility and inclusion factors like speech-to-text conversion, ASL, etc.
What we learned
We learned many great things through this project, such as, teamwork, cooperation, and time management. We also learned non-technical skills, like pre-planning/brainstorming via the prototypes we designed for our website.
What's next for CancerCnect
We hope to expand our target market and collaborate with hospitals and health professionals all around the world to connect as many patients as we can.
