Inspiration
Our video game is inspired by the game "We Become What We Behold." We were inspired by the game's ability to convey the issue of how news outlets influence our perception of others and the world through its simple game mechanics. We decided we wanted to use our game to shed light on the detriments of consumerism, specifically fast fashion, and how social media contributes to the issue. The simple mechanics of a dress-up game made implementing this idea viable, and allowed us to be creative with the graphics and details.
What it does
Fastest Fashions is a simple dress-up game that confronts the issues with fast fashion. The game takes about 5-10 minutes to complete and features a variety of outfits that the character can wear, along with four stages for the player to pass.
How we built it
We divided our team into two parts, two members working on development, and two working on design and assets. We learned pygame and started by implementing simple interactive designs, like buttons and changing backgrounds. Eventually, as we became more comfortable with the library, we continued to implement the rest of our game, dividing the levels and selecting outfits that would pass each level. The designers worked throughout the project, finding, creating, and modifying all of the assets so that they would fit with our avatar.
Challenges we ran into
The team all experienced the iterative process of optimizing the design and code to maximize the player experience. We had to make choices between what was in-scope, what could be done within the time frame, and how viable all the aspects of the game would be within our skill levels. The dev team would run into issues with how the assets would appear on the screen, so the design team would either have to create new assets to ease the burden on the dev team or alter the existing ones. Making these decisions and going back-and-forth was the major challenge.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are all extremely proud to have completed our first ever hackathon!
What we learned
The development team learned how to use pygame during this hackathon and developed more experience in coding with python. The design team gained experience in developing assets for a game focusing on raising awareness about fast fashion.
What's next for Fastest Fashions
If we were to work on this further, we would focus on polishing the game, potentially adding a video prologue and more levels to further support the theme of the game.
