Inspiration
As a child I was obsessed with fashion, but no dress up game would have those wonderful gowns you’d see on TV. Our gameplay inspiration was Dress to Impress, but we aimed for an actual high fashion dress up game.
The Game
First, users read the theme: the models aren’t getting ready for “casual streetwear” or “business meeting”, they’re going to the MET Gala in New York or the Oscars’ night in Los Angeles. The users dress their model with our 2D hand-drawn gowns; then, they can vote for the best outfit in a competition of 4 designers and the best one climbs the leaderboard to become the next Fashion Icon.
Building it
Accessorizing is vital: we learned how to use fake 2D objects (flat 3d Meshes) so that our users can move, scale and rotate charms however they want.
Challenges
Most games force the layering of clothes, restraining users’ creativity. We wanted to allow our designers to combine clothes and accessories as they prefer, so we decided to create a system that allows them to freely layer items, putting a T-shirt on top of a dress if needed.
Accomplishments & learnings
Mykyta wrote two scripts that automatically turn all of the clothing images into optimized meshes ready for import, so we learnt a lot on how to build a full-2D game in the 3D engine that is Horizon Worlds.
Future
We plan to implement 3D outfits, and a feature that allows you to actually create your own dresses by co-designing with AI: you quickly sketch the dress on mobile, and GenAI implements it for you. We also plan to create 3D versions of celebrities' dresses for seasonal events, so you’ll make everyone wonder: are you the next Fashion Icon?
