Fashion Fusion
Inspiration
Online shopping has always had one fundamental problem: you can't try before you buy. Every year, billions of dollars worth of clothing is returned because items don't fit or look different than expected. We've all been there—scrolling through product images, wondering "Will this actually look good on me?"
Fashion Fusion was born from this frustration. We wanted to bridge the gap between physical retail's try-on experience and e-commerce's convenience. Our vision: What if you could virtually try on any product from any store, instantly seeing yourself in complete outfits before making a purchase?
What it does
Fashion Fusion is an AI-powered virtual try-on platform that revolutionizes online shopping by letting users:
- Upload a single photo and instantly see themselves wearing different products
- Try on complete outfits including clothing, shoes, bags, scarves, hats, jewelry, and accessories
- Browse 100+ real products dynamically fetched from actual e-commerce stores using SerpAPI
- Visualize realistic results using advanced AI (YouCam API) that accurately drapes, fits, and renders products on their body
- Download try-on images to compare options or share with friends
- Shop with confidence by adding items they've virtually tried to their cart
Unlike traditional try-on tools limited to just tops or dresses, Fashion Fusion supports 10+ product categories with intelligent AI detection that automatically selects the right rendering engine for each item type.
How we built it
Tech Stack
Frontend:
- React 18 with TypeScript for type-safe component architecture
- Vite for lightning-fast development and optimized production builds
- Tailwind CSS for responsive, modern UI design
- Lucide React for consistent iconography
AI & APIs:
- YouCam API - Industry-leading virtual try-on technology with multiple specialized endpoints:
cloth-v4for tops, bottoms, dresses, outerwearshoes-transferfor footwear with gender-specific fittingbagendpoint for handbags and accessoriesscarfandhatendpoints with style randomization for natural draping
- SerpAPI - Real-time product scraping from Google Shopping for dynamic inventory
- Custom AI Category Detector - Intelligent product classification system
Deployment:
- Vercel for seamless CI/CD and global edge deployment
Architecture Highlights
Multi-Endpoint Integration: Built a sophisticated routing system that analyzes product type and automatically selects the optimal YouCam API endpoint with correct parameters for each category.
Dynamic Product Catalog: Real-time product fetching with balanced gender distribution (49 men's + 52 women's products) across all categories using intelligent SerpAPI queries.
Optimized User Flow:
Upload Photo → Select Gender → Browse Products → Generate Try-On → Download/Shop
Challenges we ran into
1. API Documentation Gap
Challenge: YouCam's official documentation was incomplete, causing 400/404 errors on multiple endpoints.
Solution: We systematically tested each endpoint, documented actual parameter requirements, and created internal documentation. Discovered that:
- Bag endpoint rejects
styleparameter despite docs suggesting it - Scarf/hat require
style: "random"for proper rendering - Jewelry endpoints (bracelet/ring/earrings) don't exist despite being listed
2. Multi-Category Support
Challenge: Each product category needs different API parameters and endpoints.
Solution: Built an intelligent routing system:
if (category === 'shoes') → shoes-transfer endpoint + gender param
if (category === 'bags') → bag endpoint (no style param!)
if (category === 'scarves') → scarf endpoint + style:"random"
if (category === 'jewelry') → check if supported, show error if not
else → cloth-v4 with garment_category
3. Gender Format Inconsistency
Challenge: Our UI used "men"/"women", but YouCam API requires "male"/"female".
Solution: Implemented mapping layer in the API service:
const apiGender = userGender === 'men' ? 'male' : 'female';
4. Product Distribution Balance
Challenge: Initial SerpAPI queries returned 80% men's clothing, creating poor UX.
Solution: Restructured search queries with explicit gender filters to achieve 50/50 distribution.
5. Image Download CORS Issues
Challenge: Direct image downloads from YouCam CDN initially blocked by CORS.
Solution: Implemented blob-based download with proper error handling and cleanup.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
✨ Built a production-ready app with 100+ real products from actual e-commerce stores
✨ Solved complex API integration challenges through systematic debugging and documentation
✨ Achieved 10+ category support when most try-on tools only handle 2-3 categories
✨ Delivered smooth UX despite underlying API limitations—graceful error handling for unsupported features
✨ Created intelligent routing system that automatically selects optimal AI endpoints based on product type
✨ Open-source contribution: Our endpoint documentation helps future developers integrate YouCam API
What we learned
Technical Insights
API Integration is Never Straightforward: Official documentation often differs from actual API behavior. Always test endpoints independently and document findings. We learned to treat API docs as a starting point, not gospel.
User Experience > Features: We initially built a "combinations" feature (multiple items in one photo) but removed it when we discovered the API limitation. A clean, working experience beats a broken feature every time.
Type Safety Saves Time: TypeScript caught dozens of potential runtime errors during development, especially with complex API response handling and multi-step state management.
Progressive Enhancement: Starting with core working features (clothing try-on) then expanding to accessories was more effective than trying to build everything at once.
Domain Knowledge
Fashion Technology Constraints: Virtual try-on isn't magic—each category (clothing vs accessories vs jewelry) requires different computer vision models with unique limitations. Understanding these constraints shaped our feature decisions.
E-commerce UX Patterns: Users expect gender-first navigation, clear product categorization, and the ability to compare multiple try-ons side-by-side. We learned these patterns through user testing.
Problem-Solving Philosophy
When we hit the jewelry endpoint 404 errors, we had two choices:
- ❌ Keep trying to make it work (wasted time)
- ✅ Disable gracefully with clear messaging (better UX)
This taught us that knowing when to pivot is as important as persistence.
What's next for Fashion Fusion
Near-Term Enhancements
- Save Try-On History: Let users revisit previous try-ons without re-uploading
- Social Sharing: Share try-ons to Instagram/Pinterest for friend feedback
- Size Recommendations: ML-based fit predictions using body measurements
- Price Comparison: Show same item across multiple retailers for best deals
Advanced Features
- Multi-Item Compositions: Once API supports it, layer multiple products (shirt + jacket + bag)
- Style AI Assistant: Natural language queries like "Find me a complete outfit for a beach wedding"
- Virtual Wardrobe: Upload your existing clothes, mix with new purchases to create outfits
- AR Mobile App: Real-time try-on using phone camera for immersive experience
Business Integrations
- Retailer SDK: White-label solution for e-commerce stores to embed try-on directly
- Affiliate Integration: Earn commissions on purchases through try-on conversions
- Analytics Dashboard: Track which products get tried on most, conversion rates, popular combinations
Vision
Our ultimate goal is to eliminate online shopping anxiety and reduce return rates industry-wide. Imagine a world where every online store has virtual try-on—Fashion Fusion is making that future possible.
