Inspiration
I always liked games you can start playing immediately, without long, complicated stories. However, it's easy to get bored when the mechanics are the same. I may have been running from the location of some event ;-) when the idea struck.
What it does
FartKnight is a retro-style, top-down arcade action game. Unlike standard shooters where you fire forward, the Knight's primary weapon is potent, weaponized gas emitted from the back! To fight off waves of incoming castle pests, you must continuously gather food items dropped across the arena. Each food type charges your "gastro-tank" and changes the properties of your flatulent emissions, turning your digestive system into an elemental weapon.
How we built it
Long ago, my daughter made a first version of it that can sometimes be found and played on the internet, using Unity. For this hackathon I used Google AI Studio.
Challenges we ran into
Initially, there were bugs and playability was not great. The Boss would die to easy and the field ended up full of confusing colors. Nothing that couldn't be fixed with some care.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
The game is very fluid, plays easy, it's easy to learn and funny. Where else can you fight your enemies this way?
What we learned
Using the right tools makes it much easier to achieve good results. AI is useful but takes a lot of guidance to get what you want.
What's next for FartKnight
Depending on where it might be implemented, extra levels could be added with other foods and enemies. A Hall of Fame could be nice if we get traction.
