Inspiration

Waste management is a huge global problem. Non-biodegradable waste is a substance that can’t be dissolved naturally or decomposed and also acts as a source of pollution. Human beings consume products, many of which are wrapped and containerized in non-biodegradable material. After consumption, the non-biodegradable waste ends up in the environment. This may cause;

Air pollution
Soil destruction
Water pollution
Ecological imbalance
Reduction in crop yield The above are just some of the problems caused by non-biodegradable waste. Therefore, we need a solution of managing non-biodegradable waste.

People see no use in waste thus its discarded in garbage bin, thus an increases green gas emission in planet Earth. Non-biodegradable waste such as plastics does not decompose easily. Our solution(FAAR) Is a web app that helps users recycle their waste, gives them reliable climate information and sensitizes them, users are able to obtain eco-points after depositing waste and can use the eco-points to redeem products such as eco-friendly cutlery set.

What it does

Our solution cares about the planet. We care about making the planet a better place for everyone. A recycling management system that accepts user information and gives them recycling points for their non-biodegradable waste. Users set up their profiles and each time they deposit waste, their eco-points increase. Users are awarded different points. The points are awarded differently to encourage users to recycle. Users can be rewarded with educational information about climate, how they can adapt to climate and environment friendly lives. Users will also receive updates about climate change and how it will affect them e.g. the week will be rainy, stay indoors. After recycling the non-biodegradable waste, the products from recycling are displayed in the eco-products section of the app and users can buy them using their eco-points. Higher eco-points means users can buy more. Higher eco-points means the user gave away much non-biodegradable waste, which means a cleaner environment. This idea will ensure people reduce, re-use and recycle. This reduces global warming caused by methane, flooding which is induced by climate change from increased temperatures and a cleaner environment since the platform will provide information for re-use, reduce and recycling. The users are made aware of the effect of their waste and immediately provided a solution. They are also educated through climate sustainability alerts and content.

I was the team captain for the Falcons.
I worked on the frontend side of the application.
I also used power virtual agents to build the chatbot and azure custom vision to train the waste categorization model.

Margaret Kamau
I worked on the Backened and it was my first time using Laravel and Microsoft Azure Cloud Services too. But I managed to learn and I worked on the application's authentication on the backened. I hosted the application on App Service and created the Azure sql database that I connected to App Service.

Halimah Bukirwa
I worked on part of the backend, linking the authentication module's backend with the frontend. I also worked on downloading and building the laravel dependancies that would be used throughout the project.
I was not too well-versed with php and laravel, so it was a fun learning experience.

I worked on the front-end part of the website. Also ensured our design is optimized for mobile users.

Antony Osebe
My contribution to this solution was mainly in the front end. Alongside my other team members, I supported the development of the web-application in which I used html, css, js and bootsrap. I also integrated the maps API to the web-app to ensure users can get access to the drop off locations. The main goal I had in mind was to create a smooth interaction between the user and our solution.
