Inspiration
We love cozy farming games and we hope to one day have a real life homestead, so this is us bringing that dream to the virtual world. There aren't enough multiplayer farming games out there, especially in VR, so we know there's a passionate audience for this type of experience.
What it does
Run your farm solo, or work with friends to take home even greater profits. Tend to your crops and choose a quick one-click sale or bring them to the market at the docks to warn more per harvest. Use the profits to reinvest in premium crops, fertilizer and a range of farm animals that will propel you further to the top of the Top Tycoon leaderboard.
How we built it
We used the Desktop Editor and Quest to assemble the world. Blender for retexturing, 3D Modeling. Scripting was mostly done in Codeblocks and some Typescript included.
Challenges we ran into
Creating tools (axes, buckets, wrenches, feed bags and so on) that work for both VR and mobile users proved to be the toughest task. Horizon's avatar animations and icons are designed for marksmanship, not farming. The final result is as fun to play in mobile as it is in VR, and there are benefits to having both types of players in world, like how mobile users can run faster to get deliveries done, or VR users can find hidden treasures more easily thanks to their expanded view.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Implementing seasons that changes every few minutes added more reason to use early-game crops throughout the play experience and picky animals mean you always need to have a balanced selection of crops if you want to gain their affection.
What we learned
This was the first time we really used the desktop editor instead of just VR. The process really tested our skills, but we now have a bag of tricks we can draw upon for future projects.
What's next for Farmstead Island
This was a game we always wanted to make, but it's just the beginning. We build our games with the plan to continue supporting it with new, fresh content. More animals, more crops, more surprises, wearables and improved performance and economy is all on the horizon.
