Inspiration

The plea of a hanging farmer and a poor; helpless family, the producers of the most basic necessity, unable to fulfill their own needs because of being underpaid. The compassion and the need for the social cause ignited a spark in the technically abled fraternity to help the farmers and their families, which resulted in Farmisible.

What Farmisible does

It connects the customer with the farmer directly through an easily accessible online platform like a website or a mobile application, where commerce takes place. It helps to reduce the complexity in the chain process of cultivating products to selling it to the consumers.

How we built Farmisible

We reduced the usage of different types of technologies for a specific domain to a single software called SAP (written in the language called ABAP) which is capable of handling all the processes from developing the logic to handling the database and even providing the necessary APIs to work seamlessly with different technologies. We used HTML5 and CSS3 to build the website and JAVA to build the mobile application and integrate both platforms with SAP.

Challenges we ran into

One of the foremost challenge was to create an interface that was both easy to use and attractively laid out so that it bridges the gap between a farmer in a remote area and a consumer in an urban society. Following this, one of the major challenges was to convey the idea to the remotely educated farmers since initiating any effort that involves technology into the rural areas still poses to be a hectic and very demanding job in India. However, even after overcoming this challenge, removing middlemen still was not easy as they knew the market and could easily manipulate it and bully farmers into selling them their produce.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Though not easy, but the eventual removal of the middlemen made the process of commerce very easy, quick, and efficient. The complexity of multiple stages of buy-and-sell was removed which helped the farmers sell their produce at a comparatively higher price and yet the actual consumer had to pay less since now they didn't have to cater to the incomes of middlemen making the product cost-effective. All this led to the financial stability of farmers.

What we learned

Bringing an agricultural reform is not easy but constant and continued efforts might lead us to our vision. Also, initiatives like Farmisible help us to bridge the gap between the rural and urban sectors of our society.

What's next for Farmisible

To bring in more and more farmers from all sorts of farming sectors like Polyculture, vineyards, etc under the Farmisible umbrella and benefit the society in other sustainable and consumer-friendly ways. We also look forward to completely eradicate the middlemen section from the agricultural supply chain.
