Inspiration
The game "Farming Simulator" was born out of a desire to bridge the gap between cute, casual games like Stardew Valley and the more serious, educational experiences found in titles like Farming Simulator 2023. The goal was to create a game that offers both fun and educational elements, appealing to a wide audience.
What it does
"Farming Simulator" is a fully-featured simulator game where players can interact with various in-game elements. It offers engaging gameplay with movement animations, a player inventory, and the ability to interact with farmable land. Players can engage in activities such as plowing, tilling, spraying, planting, watering, and witnessing the growth of their crops. Moreover, the game provides valuable educational content in the form of infographics that explain soil quality and fertility, helping players make informed decisions about crop rotation. For instance, players learn that after growing corn, the soil is depleted of specific nutrients, encouraging them to plant beans or sorghum to replenish the soil for future corn crops.
How we built it
The game was developed using Unity, and custom scripts were written in C#. A team of designers created pixel art assets, while the development team worked on the backend to ensure the game's functionality.
Challenges we ran into
The development team encountered challenges with sprite design, including issues with transparent backgrounds that affected the overall aesthetics. Additionally, backend coding presented its own set of hurdles
Accomplishments that we're proud of
The team takes pride in the exceptional pixel art created for the game and the overall progress made in a short amount of time. While there's still room for improvement, the team is pleased with the game's current state, acknowledging that game development is an ongoing process.
What we learned
Working with Unity was found to be both challenging and rewarding. Overcoming the difficulties and being able to play through a game created by the team was a gratifying experience.
What's next for Farming Simulator
These are the features we hope to add soon:
- More crops.
- Add seasons into the game. Currently we only have summer.
- Add tools into the game to allow players to perhaps harvest multiple crops.
- Add a monetary system to simulate an economy.
- Work on more assets and expand the world.
- Much more! We can't list everything we want to do here because of character limit, but please follow our GitHub for the latest updates!
