Inspiration
When we first discussed the topic of space exploration, the first thing that came to our minds was the fascinating space foods that we saw in movies. As young adults, we wanted to inspire future kids in the same way in which we were influenced, but this time with a game. Though we didn't have extensive knowledge of technologies in space or even space travel, we simply wanted to replicate the idea that sparked our fascination with space.
What it does
SPACE RACE brings players into this interactive environment in which they explore the different space foods on board. Not only are there informative excerpts, dialogue with the scientists, and interactive features, but there are also mini quizzes within the platform.
How we built it
We built the game using Glitch, a collaborative coding platform that allowed us to develop a website using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.
Challenges we ran into
For the majority of us, it was our very first hackathon, so it was hard to combine and understand our own strengths and weaknesses. For one, we all had relatively minimal web development experience, so figuring out the formatting of UI and backend components definitely had a steep learning curve. The configuration of the storyline was also quite difficult, we had to do research and scriptwriting.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
I'm glad that we were able to come up with an idea relatively fast. Usually, during hackathons, we would spend hours grueling over what to do for our project. But this time, there was such synergy between us, that we were able to pull through.
What we learned
By the end of this hackathon, we have gone from having minimal web dev experience to becoming rather proficient in CSS and HTML. In addition, we have learned how to collaborate better as a team and how to exchange ideas in an efficient matter. This was some of our's first in-person hackathon experience so that in itself was a new and exciting learning experience.
What's next for SPACE RACE
We hope to incorporate a backend with more sophisticated branches and user log-in support, such that progress can be saved. We also hope to introduce a mobile version in the future.
