Flora and Fauna Track + Beginner + Educational
Inspiration
Our goal was to create a food delivery service like DoorDash or Postmates that specializes in delivering produce from producers and local farmers' markets. This is a great way to increase community involvement by supporting local farmers and encouraging people to engage in more eco-friendly lifestyles.
What it does
Our web app displays the farmers' markets near your address with an option to see what vendors are available to order from. We also have a page to educate people on the importance of supporting local farms, how it benefits the community, and the impact of food waste on the environment.
How we built it
We started with a blank template from Glitch and used HTML, CSS and JavaScript to build the basic structure and figure out what we wanted on each page. It was also important to us to have a page to educate customers on how their food choices impact the environment.
Challenges we ran into
Since our team is entirely first-time hackers, it was challenging to come up with an idea and execute it in such a short period of time. We also had to learn or review the process of developing a website which slowed us down.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're all proud of completing our first hackathon, especially because some of us have had little experience with web development.
What we learned
We learned how to brainstorm and come up with an idea and implement it within 24 hours. This required us to plan our time wisely. It was also our first time collaborating to build a website so we learned how to work as a team. We learned how to add a calendar using HTML. Finally, building a website about sustainability required us to learn a lot about how individual choices can contribute to climate change, as well as the little things we can do every day to help our planet.
What's next for FarmFast
Our next step will be to develop a mobile app to make our delivery service more accessible on the go.
