Inspiration
Living in a small town, I struggled to keep track of when local farmers’ markets were open or what fresh produce was in season. I wanted a simple, all-in-one tool that cut through the chaos – no logins, no complicated steps, just clear, actionable info for food lovers like me.
What it does
FarmersMarket Finder centralizes everything you need to know about local farmers’ markets: operating hours, seasonal produce guides, vendor ratings, interactive maps with crowd level tips, and live market status updates. It’s designed for anyone who loves fresh, local food – from home cooks to tourists.
How we built it
We started by mapping core user needs (finding markets, checking produce, avoiding crowds) then built a responsive web stack with React for the frontend. We integrated mapping tools for location tracking, curated seasonal produce data by regional growing cycles, and built logic to calculate crowd levels and optimal visit times.
Challenges we ran into
Calibrating crowd level logic to match real-world market patterns took trial and error – we had to refine time-based crowd metrics to reflect actual peak hours. We also faced hurdles making the map load seamlessly across mobile and desktop, and ensuring live status updates felt instant without draining resources.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Creating a fully responsive app that loads in under 2 seconds, with intuitive navigation that makes even first-time users feel at home. We’re especially proud of the seasonal produce guide – it’s hyper-local and always up-to-date with what’s fresh in the region.
What we learned
We deepened our understanding of user-centric design – prioritizing simplicity over features made the app far more useful. We also learned how to balance real-time data updates with performance, and how to translate complex local food system data into easy-to-understand visuals.
What's next for this project
We plan to expand to more regional markets, add hyper-local produce recommendations tailored to user preferences, and integrate transit directions to make market visits even easier. We’re also exploring partnerships with local vendors to highlight special seasonal offerings.
