Inspiration
As a busy parent juggling work and family meals, I watched so much good food go to waste—rotisserie chicken, leftover rice, roasted veggies. I knew there had to be a way to turn these odds and ends into satisfying meals while keeping my family safe. Seeing friends struggle with the same problem (and worrying about foodborne illness) sparked the idea for LeftoverMaster: a tool that makes leftover reuse easy, safe, and creative.
What it does
LeftoverMaster helps users repurpose leftovers into creative, tasty recipes—no more boring repeat meals. It also provides clear guidance on safe food storage timelines, optimal reheating methods for different foods, and critical food safety checks to prevent spoilage or cross-contamination. Every feature is designed to cut down on food waste while making meal prep simpler for busy households.
How we built it
We started with user research, interviewing 20+ households to identify pain points around leftover management. Using React Native for cross-platform compatibility, we built a mobile interface focused on simplicity (no login required). We curated a library of family-friendly recipes tailored to common leftover combinations, paired with evidence-based food safety guidelines from regulatory bodies. The UI was designed in Figma to prioritize accessibility and intuitive navigation, with color-coded safety indicators for clarity.
Challenges we ran into
The biggest hurdle was balancing depth of information with usability—food safety rules are detailed, but users need quick, scannable guidance. We also struggled to design the photo recognition flow to be intuitive (even for non-technical users) while ensuring the ingredient-matching logic accurately prioritized recipes that use all leftover items. Testing with diverse users revealed gaps in how we presented reheating instructions for different cultural cooking styles, which required iterative tweaks.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We created an app that’s both practical and joyful—users tell us they’ve cut food waste by 30% and discovered new family favorite meals. The color-coded storage timeline has been praised for making food safety approachable, and the recipe matching system consistently surfaces creative (yet achievable) meal ideas. Most importantly, we built something that aligns with our values of sustainability without feeling preachy or overwhelming.
What we learned
We learned that simplicity is key—users don’t want to dig through menus to find critical info. We also gained a deeper understanding of regional food safety norms and how to translate technical guidelines into everyday language. Building this app taught us the value of user testing early and often: small tweaks (like larger touch targets for busy parents) made a huge difference in usability.
What's next for this project
We plan to expand the recipe library to include more global cuisines (reflecting diverse household tastes) and add a meal-planning feature to help users map leftovers into weekly menus. We’re also exploring integration with smart refrigerators to auto-track storage timelines, and a community section where users can share their own leftover hack ideas. Finally, we want to partner with food waste reduction nonprofits to amplify the app’s impact.
