Where did it begin?
The idea was planned and brought out with my team, and the problem was first discovered by the daily issues and fraud happening to farmers. Farmers in our country often face discrimination when attempting to sell their products and struggle to find suitable markets. Unfortunately, these issues have yet to be addressed or resolved by the relevant authorities. Therefore, we are proud to offer a solution that allows our fellow farmers, who are the backbone of our country's tradition and culture, to earn fair profits by eliminating the need for middlemen. - FarmEASY, an easy-to-use Application to aid the farmers and work for their benefit, establishing Direct-2-Consumers (D2C)
What it does
We developed a mobile application that will allow farmers to communicate with customers directly. Our platform promotes the Direct-to-Consumer (D2C) model in agriculture, which enables farmers to bypass intermediaries and sell their products directly to customers. This enables farmers in making more profit. Our app supports bulk restaurant orders and contract-based ordering between customers and farmers for a specified period, offering farmers more stability. Farmers can also form communities and collaboratively set prices for their products, expanding their networks. Additionally, our app displays real-time market rates for each product using graphs to provide users with information on the current market price. Customers can also monitor their purchases in real time.
How we built it
Our app was constructed using the emerging Flutter framework, which offers an excellent platform for app development. To facilitate our backend operations, we integrated Firebase into our app, which enables us to easily manage product additions, deletions, and updates. Additionally, we are currently working on incorporating a machine-learning algorithm that can analyze and interpret the graphical details of our products. This feature will enhance the functionality of our app and provide farmers with even more powerful tools for managing their operations.
How is the price of products are determined?
Every product's base prices are determined by the farmer's union and the government farm association every day. So from the base price, the app will add extra charges according to the distance, this is calculated by a layer-by-layer approach, where once an order is placed its checks the availability of the order within the first layer (which adds a certain amount of charge), if not, the order is moved to next layer where a charge greater than previous layer is added to the base amount. Thus this provides the cost for delivery of the product to the farmers and also the consumers are given the choice of whether to take up the order or not.
How the delivery of goods is plotted?
Since the government farming union is directly involved, they provide warehouses and shelters for the products sent by the farmers, also their expenses spent on these will be compensated by the application, and they can arrange farm expo and collect one-time taxes and fees. also, they can advertise farming tools and products through the application, thus both of them are mutually benefitted.
Challenges we ran into
We understand that some farmers may lack the necessary education or skills to operate a mobile application, which may make it challenging for them to add, update or modify their products on our platform. To address this issue, we have established a customer service center that farmers can reach out to for assistance. Our customer service representatives will provide guidance on using the app and help farmers manage their accounts. By providing access to a reliable customer service center, we aim to ensure that all farmers can participate in our platform and benefit from the Direct-to-Consumer (D2C) model.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We rejoice about the accomplishments of our 2nd place at FestX'23, a National level 1-day Hackathon evaluated by experts from CTS organization, it was a tough competition with more than 200 teams with multi-disciplinary projects, and with our hard work and team coordination we got 2nd place with cash prize for Rs.5,000.
We also presented our idea at Anna University among various startups and were recognized by many prominent people from the industry.
What we learned
Throughout our project, we encountered various obstacles that ultimately became valuable learning experiences. As we tackled each hurdle, we gained insights into the challenges faced by farming communities, and we integrated these insights into our application by adding new features. Going forward, we are committed to leveraging our app to address the many issues encountered by farmers. We will continue to work diligently to help farmers overcome their challenges and improve their livelihoods.
What's next for FarmEasy
It is crucial to make the app known to the farming communities to ensure its adoption and success. We believe that farmers should take responsibility for spreading the word about the app to their peers. To accelerate the adoption of our application, we can leverage various marketing channels, including social media, community outreach programs, and word-of-mouth referrals. Additionally, we can introduce new features, such as showcasing innovative farming methods, to keep farmers engaged and interested in our platform. Our customer service team can assist in broadening the scope of our app by answering questions and addressing concerns raised by farmers. We will verify all our partners, including producers and organizations, to ensure they meet our standards. Finally, we can consider launching marketing campaigns to gain international recognition and expand our user base beyond our domestic market.
