Inspiration
Big agriculture distribution chains take a massive cut while local independent farmers and nearby buyers get squeezed on both ends. We wanted to build a peer-to-peer produce exchange for California’s agricultural heartland that hits like a modern marketplace—think Depop, but for fresh crops straight off the farm gate.
What it does
FarmaGo is a direct-to-buyer agricultural marketplace connecting Central Valley growers with local co-ops, community kitchens, and regional markets. It features:The Fresh Market: A clean, itemized grid of direct surplus listings (like heirloom tomatoes and citrus crates) complete with farmer badges, transparent pricing, and instant connect buttons.Fresno City Exchange Map: An interactive visual map overlay of Fresno anchored by the region's urban layout, featuring color-coded pins to separate buyers (blue) from sellers/growers (yellow) with live filtering toggles. Aerial Farm Hero: A high-resolution scroll-parallax opener showcasing real Central Valley agriculture. Meadow Footer: A signature animated blue-hour dusk footer with a translucent giant wordmark.
How we built it
Frontend Architecture: Built using clean, self-contained single-file HTML5, modern vanilla JavaScript, and customized CSS styling with deep dark-mode and high-contrast agricultural palettes.Mapping Engine: Integrated custom interactive map viewports utilizing high-resolution regional image coordinates paired with absolute-positioned pulsing CSS marker nodes for zero-config, API-key-free deployment. UI/UX Design: Crafted with an aggressive, clean high-contrast aesthetic, smooth CSS transitions, and responsive grid layouts.
Challenges we ran into
Getting the custom coordinate positioning for the blue buyer and yellow seller pins to map cleanly over the Fresno city grid without requiring bloated external mapping libraries or breaking responsiveness on mobile views. Striking that exact high-end, clean product-design balance between an industrial agricultural tool and a sleek modern consumer marketplace.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Shipping a fully functional, lightning-fast single-file web app complete with working category filters, interactive pin toggles, and gorgeous typography. Nailing the visual identity of the Central Valley agricultural hub right down to the specific neighborhood zones (Bullard, Tower District, Clovis, West Fresno).
What we learned
How to leverage lightweight CSS absolute overlays and custom SVG/DOM pulse animations to build robust, zero-dependency interactive maps that load instantly without needing third-party API keys. The power of keeping single-file codebases modular and clean so they can deploy instantly anywhere from localhost to production.
What's next for FarmaGo
Hooking up a live backend database with real-time grower inventory syncing and authentication. Expanding the regional map overlays from Fresno across the entire Central Valley from Stockton down to Bakersfield. Implementing encrypted direct messaging between growers and buyers for seamless pickup negotiations.
