Inspiration

Small-scale farmers often earn only a fraction of retail prices because they rely on layers of middlemen and lack the digital skills or capital to reach online shoppers. Meanwhile, urban consumers want fresher, traceable food but rarely know where to find it. Seeing both sides lose, we set out to build a tool that removes the middle layer, gives farmers fairer income, and lets buyers support local agriculture with confidence — without requiring either group to be tech experts.

What it does

Farm2Hand is a web marketplace where farmers can list produce in minutes and sell directly to consumers. Buyers can

  • browse or search by category, farm, price, or distance
  • chat with growers, place orders, and earn loyalty points
  • see AI-powered labels that highlight minor imperfections for discounted “ugly” produce Farmers use a simple form-based interface (Thai) to post items, manage orders, and answer common questions through an integrated chatbot.

How we built it

  • Bolt.new for no-code visual building, app logic, and rapid page creation
  • React inside Bolt.new for custom components and responsive design
  • Supabase for authentication, product data, orders, and point tracking
  • OpenAI Chat Completion API for the multilingual chatbot and product suggestions
  • Netlify CI/CD to deploy the full-stack app with one click

Challenges we ran into

  • Balancing a clean UX with advanced features such as AI recommendations and points
  • Handling mixed Thai/English queries and dialect variations in the chatbot
  • On-boarding first-time users who are unfamiliar with online marketplaces
  • Coordinating six parallel feature streams in a single Bolt.new workspace under tight time limits

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Delivered a working MVP in under a week that real farmers could test on mobile
  • Built an AI chatbot that answers 85 % of common buyer questions correctly in Thai
  • Integrated visual defect detection to promote “imperfect” produce at fair discounts
  • On-boarded two pilot farms who completed actual sales during demo day

What we learned

  • No-code tools plus small React injections can ship complex marketplaces rapidly
  • Designing for low-tech users forces welcome simplicity and clarity
  • AI chat greatly lowers friction for sellers when tuned to local language
  • Early real-world testing surfaces hidden hurdles (e.g., rural bandwidth, colloquial terms) faster than lab demos

What's next for Farm2Hand

  1. Integrate e-payment and last-mile delivery partners for end-to-end fulfillment
  2. Expand language support to Lao and Khmer for cross-border farm cooperatives
  3. Release an offline-first mobile PWA for areas with spotty connectivity
  4. Launch a “community box” subscription that bundles seasonal produce from multiple farms
  5. Open our API so local grocery stores and restaurants can source directly from Farm2Hand
