Inspiration

The agriculture sector is a cornerstone of many East African economies, engaging approximately 70% of the population according to Farmafrica.org. For farmers, agriculture not only provides sustenance but also generates surplus crops for the market. To enhance their income and further develop their farming practices, it is essential to gain both regional and global recognition. Such international visibility will facilitate increased revenue, thereby contributing to the broader economic development of their countries. However, the absence of a widely recognized and trusted platform for regional, global visibility hinders farmers from effectively showcasing their products on an international scale. Consequently, many farmers face challenges such as unsold or deteriorating crops and reduced prices, despite the presence of bulk buyers worldwide who could utilize these products in industries, hotels, and large supermarkets.

Thus, Farm2Global platform is intended to solve the above mentioned visibility issue.

What it does

Farm2Global allows local farmers from East African Countries to have regional and international visibility where anyone anywhere can recognize what they produce. This will facilitate direct contact between bulk buyers and bulk farmers to discuss business opportunities and next steps.

How we built it

Farm2Global platform will leverage the existing Digital ID system in East Africa through MOSIP.IO to create a registry of credible large-scale farmers. This system will register and authenticate farmers through their UIN (Unique Identification Number) generated by Mosip Digital ID’s modules such as eSignet. Upon successful authentication verification, the farmer will have to update the basic information needed for the Farm2Global and after submitting, he/she will be included on a pending list of recognized and trusted agricultural producers. The next and final step is that the farmer will need to provide evidence of their crop varieties and production capacities for specific periods. This proof may include images, videos, and a site visit conducted by one of our representatives. Once the evidence is reviewed and approved, the farmer will officially be listed on our global online platform, Farm2Global.

The Farm2Global platform will be accessible worldwide, allowing only our verified farmers to showcase their works through a successful authentication using Mosip eSignet. This will facilitate trust and direct contact between buyers and farmers to discuss business opportunities and next steps.

Farm2Global platform will be implemented using a combination of the following technologies: HTML, CSS,JavaScript, NodeJS, MOSIP.IO sandbox, MongoDB/PostgreSQL and Cloud Technology solutions for scalability.

Challenges we ran into

So far no challenge we have met

Accomplishments that we're proud of

So far we have been able to analyze the idea, come up with all block diagrams and all needed components for the software to be developed for the project. Also, we have created the Platform's User Interface now on the scale of 80%.

What we learned

We have learnt that by leveraging the existing Digital ID infrastructure, it is possible to modernize agriculture sector which is one of the cornerstones for East African countries' economy. Also, some Web technologies (Frontend development) have been learnt by some team members.

What's next for Farm2Global

Currently, we have the web app complete. So, the next step is to test it at small scale and finally release it to be used on national and regional scale to enhance East African local farmers' visibility. Also in future, the mobile app, online payments and delivery features will be added for operations scalability.
