Inspiration

The inspiration behind Farm-Mate stems from a deep passion for gardening and a desire to empower individuals to grow their own food. As an avid gardener myself, I understand the joy and satisfaction that comes from nurturing plants and harvesting fresh produce. I wanted to create a tool that would make the process of gardening more accessible and enjoyable for people of all skill levels, while also promoting self-sustainability and healthy living.

What it does

Farm-Mate is a mobile application designed to guide users through the process of cultivating vegetables and herbs in their backyard or garden. The app provides comprehensive instructions, tips, and tools for each stage of the cultivation process, from seed to harvest. Users can access a wide range of features including crop selection guides, step-by-step cultivation guidance, interactive calendars, and community forums to connect with other gardening enthusiasts.

How I built it

Farm-Mate was built using React Native for cross-platform mobile development, allowing me to reach a wider audience on both iOS and Android devices. I leveraged AWS services such as AWS Amplify for backend development and Amazon S3 for file storage to ensure scalability, reliability, and security. The app was designed with a user-centric approach, focusing on simplicity, usability, and intuitive navigation to provide a seamless gardening experience.

Challenges I ran into

One of the main challenges I encountered during the development process was sourcing and validating accurate information on gardening best practices and crop varieties. I spent considerable time researching and vetting sources to ensure the information provided in Farm-Mate was reliable and scientifically sound. Additionally, I faced technical challenges related to integrating third-party APIs, optimizing performance, and managing user-generated content.
