Inspiration
We play fantasy bball ourselves and are interested in it, and were curious about how it looks historically for each season, as there is not such a tool.
What it does
It takes the data for each player in each NBA season, and gets the sd and mean values for each category, getting a 9-cat z score for each player and finding values. Also, there are other interesting tools added as well.
How we built it
We used Wolfram Mathematica and gathered the data from Basketball Reference
Challenges we ran into
Finding the specific arrays the hold the correct information, dealing with players who played in multiple teams for the season, and getting rid of the null cells (for example when a player hasn't attempted a three point shot) was the hardest.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We got the project working and found some interesting information. For example, James Harden had the best fantasy season of all time in 2019, and Stephen Curry had the second best in 2016.
What we learned
We learned how to handle with data, and some interesting outliers in statistics.
What's next for FantasyBBall 9Cat Historical Tool
We are considering to switch it a website or a potential app to use.
