What was your inspiration?
The inspiration for this game came from a love of fantasy environments and the desire to create a world that feels both magical and welcoming. Magic wands and hidden gems add an element of adventure, encouraging players to interact with the environment in exciting ways. The additional activities, like small quests and the scenic sightseeing ride, were designed to give players a mix of exploration and relaxation, making the game a space where they can engage at their own pace. The hangout area draws from nature’s beauty, incorporating lush ferns, glowing mushrooms, and whimsical wee creatures. This aspect was inspired by the idea that games should be social spaces, where people can connect and unwind in a lovely setting. Ultimately, the goal was to create an experience that blends excitement, mystery, and a peaceful retreat, allowing players to escape into a world that feels truly enchanting.
What it does
Crystal Quest transports players into a breathtaking fantasy space, where they explore two floating islands filled with mystery and adventure. Equipped with magic wands, players search for hidden gems within the landscape and zap them for points. When the main quest is complete, they can take on small side missions, relax in a serene hangout space, or enjoy a sightseeing ride that circumnavigates the island, surrounded by ferns, mushrooms, and creatures.
How we built it
This game was built using the tools that Meta itself has provided us to create an immersive experience across mobile, VR, and desktop platforms. We integrated real-time visual effects (VFX) to enhance the magic wand mechanics, making interactions feel dynamic and satisfying. The landscape design and character elements were carefully crafted to foster an environment that is both captivating and social. The whole experience itself is enhanced by bespoke melodies and sounds designed especially for this game and environment.
Challenges we ran into
Developing a game that seamlessly functions for mobile users, and also fun in VR, and desktop presented a few technical hurdles. Optimizing performance while maintaining high-quality visuals was a challenge, as was designing an intuitive user experience that worked across multiple input methods. Balancing gameplay mechanics—ensuring the gem-hunting system felt rewarding without being too challenging for mobile users—took a few iterations. Additionally, creating a social space that truly felt inviting required thoughtful environmental design and interaction mechanics.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
One of our biggest achievements was successfully building a world that encourages both exploration and relaxation. The floating islands feel alive, with interactive elements, immersive soundscapes, and a rich atmosphere that welcomes players in. We’re also proud of how the magic wand mechanics turned out—it feels intuitive and satisfying, making the act of hunting for gems a rewarding part of the experience. Lastly, integrating a social hangout area makes the game not just about adventure, but about connection, giving players a space to unwind and engage with friends.
What we learned
Throughout this project, we gained a deep understanding of cross-platform development, real-time effects integration, and the challenges of optimizing a visually rich experience for different devices. We also learned that designing a social space in a game requires more than just placing interactive elements—it’s about fostering an atmosphere where players want to stay and engage. Iteration and player feedback played a crucial role in refining the overall experience.
What's next for Crystal Quest - Mobile, VR & Desktop
Going forward, we plan to expand Crystal Quest by introducing new quests, dynamic weather effects, and additional fantasy creatures to further enhance immersion. We’re also exploring the possibility of multiplayer events that encourage collaboration and friendly competition. Optimizing and refining the mobile experience remains a priority, ensuring smooth performance and a truly magical feel. Ultimately, we hope to continue improving and expanding this world, creating even more opportunities for exploration, adventure, and social engagement.
