Inspiration
We were inspired by how Redditors often give epic names to totally ordinary things—like calling a rubber duck “Commander Quackington.” We thought: what if there were a tool that let anyone instantly upgrade the title of their useless item to something legendary? So we made one.
What it does
Fancy Titles for Useless Items takes boring, everyday objects and gives them ridiculous, over-the-top titles.
- Input: any ordinary item (e.g. “spoon”)
- Output: “Archduke Curvature, the Silver Shoveler of Soup” Perfectly pointless. Gloriously silly.
How we built it
We used Bolt.new to prototype the frontend and logic quickly, then integrated with Reddit’s Devvit platform to allow users to post their fancified items directly to Reddit for internet glory. We also added random title generators with fun themes like “Royal,” “Magical,” and “Corporate Buzzword.”
Challenges we ran into
- Trying not to laugh every 5 seconds while testing.
- Getting Devvit to behave when dealing with dynamic Reddit post formatting.
- Teaching the app not to name everything “Sir Spoonington III.” It had a favorite.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Actually made people laugh out loud.
- Our app got shared around by friends and made it to some niche Reddit subs.
- My son learned how to combine creativity and code in a way that made him feel like a wizard.
What we learned
- Silly can still be smart.
- Hackathons are more fun when the goal is joy, not just utility.
- Naming things is the hardest part of programming. Also the most fun.
What's next for Fancy Titles for Useless Items
- Add a “battle of titles” mode where users vote on the fanciest name.
- Create a Chrome extension that fancifies text on any webpage.
- Maybe… a physical button that prints fancy titles onto labels. For real-world trolling.
Let me know if you'd like to make it more technical, kid-friendly, or fit within a specific word count.
