Inspiration
Fans are scattered across social apps, wikis and forums. Articles, character info, events and merchandise live in different places, and there is rarely a safe way for fans to contribute. We wanted one home for a fandom: organized, searchable and moderated. [Add one personal line here: your own fandom or why you picked this idea.]
What it does
Fan Hub Plus is a fandom community platform with three roles:
- Visitors browse featured articles, character profiles, events and merchandise without an account.
- Members sign up, verify their email, bookmark content, rate media, send feedback and submit their own fan content.
- Admins manage everything from a secure dashboard: content, characters, merchandise, events, users, ratings and the activity log. They also review pending fan submissions before anything goes public.
How we built it
- Backend: Laravel (PHP) with separate controllers for the Visitor, Member and Admin areas, plus JSON APIs behind each dashboard.
- Database: MySQL with 28 tables and 3 views (bookmark counts, average media rating, pending submissions), covering users, profiles, categories, tags, articles with images and timelines, characters, merchandise, events, ratings, bookmarks and an activity log.
- Frontend: HTML, CSS and JavaScript with a clean, colorful design and a single-page style member and admin dashboard.
- Security: role-based middleware (admin only, active users only, verified email), an HTML sanitizer for user-submitted content, and a safe-URL validation rule for links.
Challenges we ran into
- Designing one schema that supports articles, characters, merchandise, events and media without duplicating data.
- Keeping user-submitted content safe, which led us to sanitize HTML and validate URLs.
- Building a moderation flow where fan submissions are reviewed by admins before publishing.

Accomplishments that we're proud of
A complete working platform with three user roles, a moderated contribution pipeline, and a polished interface from public pages to the admin dashboard.
