Inspiration

Families back up thousands of phone photos to their NAS every year, yet most of them are never looked at again. A third of US adults rarely or never revisit the past year's photos (Mixbook/YouGov, 2025). Daily journaling apps exist, but a daily habit is hard to keep. We wanted something a busy family could actually do: ten minutes, once a week.

What it does

Family Weekly Journal is a Uliya Skill for UGREEN AI NAS. Once a week the assistant:

  • counts the week's photos by day and skips screenshot-heavy days,
  • describes the top five days in one line each,
  • asks up to three short questions ("What was the best moment of this week?"),
  • drafts a journal entry from the real photo results and your answers, and saves it after you approve,
  • keeps a progress log so it can show the same week one year ago, other family members' entries for the same week, and missed weeks to catch up.

Everything stays on the NAS. Photos are never moved, edited, or deleted.

How we built it

The Skill is a SKILL.md orchestration file plus five Markdown references (including a disclosures file), built with the official UGOS Skill Creation Tool (uliya-skill-kit). The parent assistant only delegates self-contained tasks to registered expert agents: photo-agent (search-picture, search-screen, vision-vlm, create-album), knowledge-agent (save-text, audio-transcription), and file-agent (find, mkdir, echo, cat, get-user-dir). Each step passes only real results from earlier steps, and all five delegation states are handled. The package passes the starter kit's static checker with no errors or warnings.

AI tools used: Claude (Anthropic) via Claude Code, for research, drafting, and review. The problem, the weekly family journal concept, and the design decisions were chosen by the entrant. Details are in references/disclosures.md in the Skill package.

Challenges

  • The capability catalog has no "group photos into events" action, so we group by calendar day and let the parent pick the top days.
  • The built-in model is small and has weak chat memory, so continuity lives in a progress-log file on the NAS instead of the conversation.
  • Review albums cannot be deleted by the Skill, so the Skill asks before creating one.

What we learned

Recalling a moment from memory helps more than just viewing a keepsake (Bryant et al., 2005). So the core of the Skill is a few good questions, not a slideshow.

What's next

Validate every capability call on a real iDX6011 Pro, measure that an entry takes under ten minutes, and test the year-end family chronicle.
