Inspiration
Family life is spread across calendars, school messages, search results, meal planning and generic AI chats. Parents do not need another chatbot. They need useful outcomes that understand the same family and fit the way each parent works.
What it does
Family Sidekicks gives a family a shared context and a crew of specialized AI helpers. Each Sidekick owns one practical corner of family life:
- Skippy finds current family activities and cited local events.
- Nori plans meals around allergies, preferences, available time and ingredients.
- Lumi creates personalized stories.
- Atlas turns learning material into level-matched, printable worksheets.
- Pippa plans birthdays and invitations.
- Quinn creates quick family games and quizzes.
- Cleo, Pip and Romy provide carefully scoped care, administration and vacation planning.
- Moxie guides parents through creating their own Sidekick.
Crew Home brings weather, meals, appointments, nearby activities and the family's attention queue into one daily view. Each parent can choose a different home crew and response style while saved plans and family facts remain shared.
How it works
The working web prototype uses a synthetic Stuttgart family and can also be personalized by the user. Family data and generated artifacts persist locally in the browser. Sidekick workbenches and their chats share the active family context, so follow-up questions understand both the family profile and the result already created in that corner.
GPT-5.6 Terra powers structured planning, personalization and tool-assisted answers through the OpenAI Responses API. GPT Image 2 supports visual creation. Zod schemas validate model output before it reaches the interface.
How Codex was used
Codex was the primary engineering collaborator throughout the build: product decomposition, interaction design, Next.js implementation, shared state architecture, structured API routes, safety boundaries, tests, CI, deployment and submission preparation. Key product decisions remained human-directed, especially the shift from a chatbot collection to a daily family operating surface with specialized Sidekick corners.
Honest prototype scope
The demo clearly distinguishes live AI capabilities, real browser actions, simulated integrations and future concepts. Gmail, calendar OAuth, booking, payments, affiliate offers and checkout are transparent simulations. Family state is browser-local, and the care experience provides first-step guidance rather than diagnosis or dosing.
What's next
The next phase would add authenticated family accounts, encrypted cloud synchronization, permissioned connectors, verified local data providers and production-grade safety evaluation.
