My Fallen Friend
Your death becomes someone else’s enemy.
My Fallen Friend is a first-person paper-diorama roguelike built for Reddit. Swipe to attack, read enemy telegraphs, guard, dodge, break defenses, and unleash weapon-specific Bursts while walking a haunted road toward the Fallen King.
Inspiration
I wanted to make a combat game that feels satisfying inside a Reddit post—and make defeat part of the community experience. When a player falls, their build can become a Fallen Rival for another Redditor to avenge. Every loss leaves behind a story for someone else.
How I built it
I built the game with Phaser, Devvit Web, TypeScript, and a serverless Reddit backend. Combat, weapons, Gambits, hit zones, and enemy behavior are data-driven. The backend supports seeded daily runs, leaderboard scoring, and Fallen Rival snapshots.
The game includes five weapon styles, adaptive enemies, risky Gambit choices, merchant stops, a Gatekeeper boss, and a throne-room finale.
What I learned
The biggest challenge was making touch-first combat readable and responsive in a Reddit webview. I learned to prioritize clear telegraphs, lightweight assets, deterministic state, and strong visual feedback.
I also built enemies as modular paper-puppet rigs, which made it possible to add new foes and animations without turning the game into a huge download.
