Inspiration
We wanted to create something that could help elderly people live more independently while keeping them safe. Falls can be especially dangerous for older adults, particularly when nobody is around to help. Our idea was to build an affordable camera system that could recognize a possible fall and alert someone when assistance is needed.
What it does
Fall Guardian is a smart home monitoring prototype designed to detect possible falls using a Raspberry Pi camera and computer vision. The goal is for the system to recognize a possible fall, ask the person if they're okay, and notify a caregiver if they don't respond or request help.
How we built it
- Hardware: Raspberry Pi 5 and Raspberry Pi Camera Module 3.
- Setup & Networking: Configured Raspberry Pi OS and connected the Pi to our laptops using Tailscale over a mobile hotspot.
- Software: Python-based video processing and fall-detection logic. Website We made a website/app that tracks falls and will notify the caregivers of falls. ## Challenges we ran into One of our biggest challenges was connecting our Raspberry Pi to our laptops. The university Wi-Fi made direct connections difficult, so we used a mobile hotspot and Tailscale. We also had to figure out remote access, camera configuration, and video streaming.
Accomplishments we're proud of
- Successfully connected our Raspberry Pi camera, captured photos and videos, and established a live video stream to a laptop.
- Built a solid, working hardware foundation for our fall-detection system.
What we learned
We gained deeper hands-on experience with Raspberry Pi hardware, Linux commands, networking, SSH, remote desktop access, and camera streaming.
