Inspiration
I was inspired by the influx of fake news being spread due to the covid19 pandemic. There was a huge problem with fake news being spread around the 2022 election as well. This made me realize the importance of not immediately trusting every news site that one sees online. However, it would be very difficult for the user to do research on every single site that they come across, so that is where chrome extensions can help.
What it does
All the user needs to do is click a button and it either shows that a website is reliable, unreliable, or in between.
How we built it
I built it with css, html, and javascript. I made a json file with hundreds of websites I complied by hand.
Challenges we ran into
The biggest challenge I ran into a was simple lack of time. I started the hackathon late and completed this project in just three days. I also unfortunately had other obligations during this time so I would like to work on it more in the future.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
The biggest accomplishment that I'm proud of is having a working extension despite a lack of experience in html and javascript. I am also proud of the database that I managed to compile.
What we learned
I have very little experience creating a browser extension and using regular expressions, so that was great to get a better handle of.
What's next for Fake News Detector
I would like to implement a lot more. Maybe have it return what political party the site belongs to, have some resources on how to detect if a news site is fake or not on your own. I would also like to improve the user interface and eventually get it released on the chrome store.
