Inspiration About the Project
In today’s digital era, fake news spreads rapidly and affects public opinion, decision-making, and social harmony. This inspired us to build Fake News Analyzer, a machine learning-powered tool to detect whether news articles are fake or real. The goal was to create an easy-to-use application that analyzes news content and helps users make informed judgments by flagging suspicious or misleading information.
How We Built It We collected two datasets — one with fake news articles and another with real news — and combined them into a single labeled dataset.
Data preprocessing involved cleaning the text by removing URLs, punctuation, numbers, and converting text to lowercase to standardize inputs.
We split the data into training and testing sets for evaluation.
Feature extraction was done using TF-IDF Vectorizer, which converts the cleaned text into numerical features suitable for machine learning.
We trained multiple classifiers, including:
Logistic Regression
Decision Tree
Gradient Boosting Classifier
Random Forest Classifier
Each model was trained and tested on the dataset, and we evaluated their performance using accuracy scores and classification reports.
Additionally, we built a manual testing function that accepts new news text inputs, cleans and vectorizes them, then predicts whether the input is fake or real using all four models for comparison.
Challenges We Faced Cleaning and preprocessing text data to remove noise while preserving useful features.
Balancing between model complexity and interpretability to achieve good accuracy without overfitting.
Ensuring consistent text processing during both training and live prediction to avoid discrepancies.
Implementing multiple models and managing their predictions efficiently.
What We Learned How to preprocess and clean large-scale text data effectively for NLP tasks.
The power of TF-IDF vectorization in transforming text into features for classification.
Comparing several machine learning models helped us understand their strengths and limitations on real-world text data.
Building a modular function for live prediction that can handle arbitrary user input.
What’s Next Enhance the model accuracy by experimenting with more advanced NLP techniques like transformer-based models (BERT, RoBERTa).
Develop a user-friendly web or mobile interface that lets users input news articles and get instant analysis.
Add explainability features to clarify why a piece of news is flagged as fake or real.
Extend support for multiple languages to reach a wider audience.
Integrate with browser extensions for real-time fake news detection while browsing.
