Inspiration

Some of our most formative educational experiences were when we got to work hands on with the concepts we were learning. While it isn't realistic to be able to work with deforestation hands on in elementary school, we thought that having a fun and engaging game would help students feel more connected to the issues around deforestation.

What it does

Our game, Fairy Factory, is a factory based game in which you build and expand factories to make wands to make more money. The goal is to make 10,000 coins, but the game will slowly show the effects of over expanding your factories. There is some light story by interactions with the fairy character. This game is integrated into our lesson plan we created for teachers or parents to use with their students.

How we built it

We built the game through scratch and we made most of the sprites for the game using clip studio paint.

Challenges we ran into

We ran into some challenges navigating scratch. Scratch was useful in being able to allow us to quickly create a game with functionality. But certain options were a bit hidden, preventing us from reaching full implementation for our idea. . We couldn't use the Block Live extension so the project couldn't be edited by multiple people, so we both could not work on the code at the same time.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of getting some functionality for our project. We managed to implement tracking coins, upgrading, and expanding factories. This was both of our first times doing game development and using scratch, so we are really proud of what we were able to accomplish!

What we learned

We learned a lot about the game development cycle, and how scratch works. We also learned more about how to refine a target audience and how to appeal to them.

What's next for Fairy Factory

The next thing for Fairy Factory is to achieve full implementation of our idea. This would include adding story elements, allowing environment changes, and creating the multiple endings. We would also want to tweak gameplay elements to make sure they are optimized for the classroom environment so that students remained engaged and so teachers have enough time to go through the entire lesson plan. Additional things like worksheets or quizzes could also be provided in later implementations.
