Inspiration
New freelancers often get bound to unfair contracts that take a lot out of them without proper compensation. I wanted to build something that points out the red flags and helps people identify these risks before signing.
What it does
It takes a PDF or text and highlights dangerous clauses, gives a real-time Contract Health Score, and provides an email template to negotiate and ask to change them diplomatically.
How we built it
I started with the Devpost Learn Skill Pack to write scope.md, prd.md, and spec.md first. Then from there, I built it with Vite, React, and Tailwind CSS. The parsing of PDFs is done locally with pdfjs-dist. I am also using a modular rules registry for legal heuristics.
Challenges we ran into
The legal detection isn't just some rigid keyword matching. It took a lot of work handling subtle modern contract workarounds while keeping all PDF extraction 100% in-browser so no private contract data ever leaves the user's computer. This took more time and effort than I expected.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
I am happy that it doesn't just warn about problems, but gives freelancers the exact diplomatic words to push back. I am also proud of having a working proof of concept that runs fast and clean.
What we learned
The power of plan-first development over going with gut feel was illuminating. I learned a lot while building the vertical slices and learning how to structure PRDs and specs that guide the implementation.
What's next for FairShare: Freelance Contract Sentinel
I am thinking about adding user accounts to track past contracts. Also, tone-adjustment sliders for email replies or an optional LLM layer for novel legalese would be very useful additions for users.
