FairNav

Inspiration

As freshmen, we recently attended our first-ever career fair, and we were extremely overwhelmed by it all. From the preparation and research to the environment and talking to recruiters, we realized students desperately need assistance navigating these events.

"We created a tool to help with research, talking points, and navigation, known as FairNav."

Who it's for

FairNav is built for the students who don't know where to start or need a hand in navigating career fairs.

  • First-time and first-gen attendees — students walking in without a family playbook, a career-center appointment, or any real sense of what to expect.
  • Underclassmen who came to explore, not just to job-hunt — freshmen and sophomores who show up curious, get steamrolled by 100+ booths, and leave without ever reaching the handful of companies that actually mattered to them.
  • Anyone without easy access to career services — students whose school's career center is overbooked, understaffed, or just never came up on their radar.

We're proof of our own use case: three freshmen who walked into their first career fair blind and underprepared, got overwhelmed by all of it, and built the tool we wish we'd had that morning.

What it does

FairNav simplifies career fair preparation by acting as your personal event assistant:

  • Parses your resume, skills, and interests to build a custom user profile.
  • Matches you with attending companies that align with your background.
  • Generates tailored company profiles featuring basic overviews and core values.
  • Features a dedicated FairDay mode to instantly pull up talking points on the floor.
  • Provides a dedicated space to log post-conversation notes (recruiter names, follow-up strategies, and interaction summaries).

How we built it

We approached the architecture with a strict focus on speed, design, and absolute privacy.

  1. Frontend & Design: Built with Next.js, React, and TypeScript. We styled the app with Tailwind CSS v4
  2. Backend & AI Engine: Deployed using Vercel with Google’s gemini-3.5-flash-lite model for resume parsing and company recommendations, complete with strict JSON schemas.
  3. Zero-Knowledge Security: Everything is encrypted locally using the Web Crypto API. We use Supabase Auth to run passwords through PBKDF2 in-browser, deriving an AES-256-GCM key that never hits a server, and Mailtrap as the SMTP provider for account setup.

Challenges we ran into

  • AI Selection: Struggled to find the right AI for resume parsing and research that balanced cost, rate limits, and accuracy without hallucinating and taking too long.
  • Login Authentication: We had to sacrifice standard features like "Forgot Password" because implementing them would require storing keys server-side, compromising our zero-knowledge promise.
  • Information Accuracy: Going through and setting strict AI parameters was necessary to prevent the system from making up company information.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Fully Encrypted Database: No one, not even us, can see a single piece of data from our users.
  • Polished Concept: Delivered a clean, formatted website with a fully functioning landing page, email authentication, and seamless state syncing that saves automatically.
  • Instantly Applicable: Developed an idea into something tangible that can instantly create value towards our academic/professional career

What we learned

  • Creating and maintaining a strong brand identity for a product.
  • Leveraging tools like Claude to accelerate full-stack website development.
  • Implementing and tuning an Artificial Intelligence API as a core backend utility.
  • Designing custom graphics to make the UI sleek and user-friendly.

What's next for FairNav

Our immediate roadmap involves fixing existing bugs and expanding our toolset:

  • [A] Implement Magic links to support Google Accounts
  • [B] Implement calendar integration
  • [C] Add an elevator pitch practice grader
  • [D] Integrate directly with application portals and job postings
