Inspiration
FactoryVerse Expert XR was inspired by real challenges in manufacturing, where operators must learn complex assembly procedures, follow standard work instructions, and maintain consistent product quality. Traditional training methods often rely on paper documents and learning directly on production lines, which can be time-consuming and costly when mistakes occur.
We envisioned a better approach: using immersive virtual reality to help workers learn by doing, practice safely, and gain confidence before performing tasks on real equipment.
What it does
FactoryVerse Expert XR is an immersive industrial training concept designed to transform manufacturing knowledge into interactive 3D experiences.
Key features include:
- VR Training Workstation: Explore a virtual factory workstation and practice industrial tasks in 3D.
- Interactive Work Instructions: Follow step-by-step visual guidance for assembly and manufacturing procedures.
- Assembly Training: Practice component handling, assembly sequences, and operational workflows.
- Quality Inspection: Learn inspection procedures and verify components against defined quality criteria.
- AI-Assisted Inspection Vision: Provide a foundation for future integration of AI-powered visual defect detection and inspection assistance.
Our goal is to make industrial training more engaging, repeatable, and accessible while helping manufacturers improve training consistency and reduce avoidable mistakes.
How we built it
FactoryVerse Expert XR is designed around an immersive XR architecture using the Immersive Web SDK (IWSDK), with Meta Quest as the target VR platform.
The project approach focuses on creating a 3D industrial workstation, organizing work instructions into sequential steps, and designing interactions that allow users to learn through practical activities rather than passive observation.
We also designed the concept with modularity in mind, so additional workstations, assembly scenarios, inspection steps, and training content can be introduced over time.
The longer-term architecture can support AI-assisted visual inspection, training analytics, and integration with Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES) to connect virtual training with real factory workflows.
Challenges we ran into
One major challenge was translating real manufacturing procedures into an immersive experience that is intuitive and easy to understand. Industrial tasks require accuracy, clear sequencing, and consistent execution, so instructions must be simple enough to follow while still reflecting practical requirements.
Another challenge was designing interactions suitable for VR while keeping important information visible and avoiding unnecessary complexity.
We also considered how to make the platform adaptable to different factories, machines, and standard operating procedures without rebuilding every training scenario from scratch.
These challenges encouraged us to prioritize modular design, guided learning, and reusable work instruction concepts.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud to develop the vision for FactoryVerse Expert XR as more than a conventional VR demonstration. It is designed as a foundation for a practical industrial learning platform that connects immersive training, digital work instructions, and quality-focused workflows.
We are especially proud of the opportunity to apply XR technology to real manufacturing problems, where better training can help reduce operator errors, improve process consistency, and preserve valuable industrial knowledge.
Our biggest accomplishment is establishing a clear direction for combining immersive experiences with the future of smart manufacturing.
What we learned
We learned that effective industrial VR is not just about creating realistic 3D environments. It must help users understand procedures, perform tasks in the correct sequence, and receive meaningful guidance throughout the learning process.
We also learned the importance of designing reusable training content instead of building isolated experiences for individual tasks.
Finally, we recognized the potential of combining XR, AI-assisted inspection, and MES technology to create a more connected manufacturing training ecosystem.
What's next for FactoryVerse
Our next goal is to evolve FactoryVerse Expert XR into a configurable platform for industrial training and digital work instruction authoring.
Planned improvements include:
- A visual editor for creating and modifying work instructions.
- More realistic VR assembly interactions and component handling.
- AI-assisted visual inspection and defect detection.
- Training analytics and operator competency assessment.
- Reusable templates for different industrial workstations.
- Integration with MES, production data, and real manufacturing workflows.
Our long-term vision is to make industrial expertise immersive, repeatable, and accessible—helping manufacturers prepare their workforce for safer, smarter, and more consistent production.
